Our office offers two types of dental veneers for our patients in the Mesa and Chandler, AZ, areas. Take a closer look at the differences between traditional and minimal-prep veneers to find out which is best for you.
Traditional porcelain veneers provide the best tooth coverage and work well for more serious dental flaws. Even though the shells are quite thin, we will need to remove a small layer of enamel for them to lay flush with surrounding teeth. Keep in mind that once enamel is removed, it cannot be replaced, making traditional porcelain veneers the more permanent option. However, permanency is an upside for many of our patients. They often last for a decade or longer, meaning you will need few replacements over a lifetime.
If you are not willing to dive into a permanent treatment or commit to future upkeep, minimal-prep veneers may be right for you. Minimal-prep veneers are even thinner than traditional shells (about 0.3 mm thick) and do not require significant alterations to your natural tooth. They are easy and painless to place and can be removed at any time without causing sensitivity or damage. While the ultra-thin shells provide more limited coverage, they mask flaws more seamlessly than composite bonding and work well for minor chips and stains.

The best candidates for porcelain veneers have healthy teeth and gums and practice good oral hygiene. If you qualify for and are interested in moving forward with treatment, our dentists can create wax-up models of your veneers. While it is not necessary, it is a good idea to wear the wax-up veneers for a couple days to get a better sense of your results. That way we can make adjustments to the final restorations according to your preferences.

Caring for Your Porcelain Veneers
Maintaining porcelain veneers is simple. For the most part, treat your veneers like you would your natural teeth. Brush and floss daily and make sure to attend regular checkups with our dentist. To ensure your treatment lasts as long as possible, avoid biting down on anything extremely hard or sticky. Putting too much pressure on your veneer can lead to cracks or chips.
If you suffer from bruxism (tooth grinding), you may want to consider wearing a mouth guard to bed to prevent unnecessary wear on your teeth.
